Frequently asked Questions

1. How can I keep up to date with vacancies at Calderdale Council?
Council jobs are advertised on our website, in Calderdale Council’s job opportunities and every Wednesday in the Halifax Evening Courier. Have a look at our current vacancies on this site and sign up to receive jobs by email.

2. Where can I learn more about the roles advertised online?
When you click on a vacancy you are interested in you will be able to view the job description and person specification relevant to that post in the right hand menu. These documents provide you with the essential and desirable criteria that you need to fulfill to be invited to interview. You may also have the opportunity to have an informal discussion about the role.

3. How do I apply online?
You will need to register with our site and create a username and password. This will enable you to return to the site and apply for additional positions.
Once you have registered and found a vacancy you would like to apply for, click to ‘Apply now’ in the right hand menu. You will be automatically directed to our online application form which you must fill in and submit to us by the closing date. Read our guidance notes to help you with your application. These can be found at the top of each individual step when filling in your application form.

4. Who should I nominate as a referee and when will they be contacted?
Please provide details of 2 referees who know you well enough to comment on your suitability for the post. One of these must be your most recent or present employer. If you have not been previously employed, please give details of a responsible person who knows you well, but is not a relative. The council reserves the right to approach any previous employer, and a formal offer of employment will not be made until satisfactory pre-employment checks, including references have been received.

5. How do I save my application?
You have the option at each individual step of the application process of saving your application by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking ‘save’. Your application will be saved in your own personal account that you created when you registered.

You will need to log in to your account and select ‘My Account’ from the menu bar. Here you will be able to view and manage your application history.

7. Where can I get help with the application form?
You can view our guidance notes found at the top of each individual step of the application form, and these should provide you with the information you need. If you have requested a paper copy of the application form you should have been sent the guidance notes in your application pack.

8. How do I know you have received my application?
We do not acknowledge receipt of paper applications, however applications submitted online will receive an automated reply which will acknowledge successful receipt of your application.

9. What happens to my application once I have submitted it?
Candidates will be shortlisted based on their ability to meet the essential and desirable criteria stated in the person specification. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted shortly after the closing date and invited to attend either an interview or assessment centre, depending on the role.

10. Can I submit my CV?
Calderdale Council does not accept CV’s in place of or in support of job applications – the reason for this is to ensure we comply with Equal Opportunities requirements. CV’s contain personal information which would enable us to identify certain information about candidates, such as gender, age, ethnicity etc. This information is held separately from your application form.

11. When will I find out if I have been shortlisted?
Shortlisted candidates will be contacted shortly after the closing date. If you do not hear from us within 4 – 6 weeks, please assume that on this occasion your application has not been successful. However, please do not let this deter you from applying for other vacancies in the future.

12. What if I require special assistance at the interview?
We endeavor to provide a recruitment process that is fair to everyone. If you have a disability and need an adjustment made to any part of the process, please do let us know. We make adjustments on an individual basis to ensure all applicants have equal opportunity to perform to the best of their ability.

13. What opportunities are there for work experience?
We work in partnership with Calderdale & Kirklees Careers in co-ordinating work placement opportunities for young people as part of their school work experience programme. We also provide a range of placement activities to inform young people about the many varied career opportunities we have available within Calderdale Council and across the local government sector.

14. My application is showing as 'awaiting processing' in my job account. What does this mean?
We are in the process of developing our online recruitment system. In the near future you will be able to track the progress of your application online using your job account however this is currently not possible and so you will see the message ‘awaiting processing’ when you try to do this.

This message indicates that we have received your completed application form. We will contact you within 4- 6 weeks of the closing date if you have been shortlisted for interview. If you do not hear from us within this period of time your application has been unsuccessful. However, please do not let this deter you from applying for other vacancies in the future.
