Learning and Development
At Calderdale Council, we believe that training and development is vital. We want to ensure that all our employees have the skills they need to do the best job they can. We want to encourage creative and innovative approaches in the way we work, and understand that offering better, more appropriate training results in a more productive and enjoyable working environment for everyone.
To achieve this, we make sure our employees are given the right tools, training and support to deliver the high standards of service we demand.
All learning and development at Calderdale Council is delivered through the Calderdale One programme
General Learning and Development
Aimed mainly at front line staff, managers and supervisors, we offer training in management skills such as:
Coaching
Recruitment and Selection
Attendance Management
Corporate Financials
Equality and Diversity
Effective Appraisals
Management forums and lunchtime briefings are also offered.
Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM)
We deliver courses for front line managers (Level 3) and managers (Level 5) for those seeking formal management qualifications.
Future Leaders Programme
We aim to ensure that our existing managers and leaders of the future are well equipped to deal with the key decision makers in a local government environment. This programme, amongst other things, gives an insight into the workings of the Political Cabinet and senior management job functions, including, Leadership, the Chief Executive’s role, the Corporate Management Teams and the Directorate Management Teams. A wide range of softer management skills training is also offered.
We have also recently offered courses in working with the media, as well as more formal training in NeuroLinguistic Programming (NLP). We have also supported teams taking part in the national role play event, the Local Government Challenge.
In addition, we understand that changing an organisation’s culture is challenging. Through our “Grasp The Nettle” initiative, we aim to cut through bureaucracy and red tape. We also offer project management training in the form of “The Calderdale Way”, our in-house project management methodology.
The Calderdale One Awards
We like to ensure that when a job's been well done, everybody gets the credit they deserve and that everybody else knows about it. The yearly Calderdale One Awards recognise seven categories of excellence:
- Team of the Year
- New Employee of the Year
- Customer Focus
- Innovation
- Leadership
- Grasp the Nettle

Calderdale. A great place to learn.
