Life in Calderdale

Stunning countryside. Lively market towns. Peace and quiet. Major cities within easy reach. An inspiring heritage. A warm welcome and a real sense of community. A place where you belong.

Calderdale is located almost exactly halfway between Manchester and Leeds, at the heart of the Yorkshire Pennines. It's a place that has inspired poets, novelists, painters and musicians. Yet it's also been called the cradle of the Industrial Revolution. It's a place of contrasts, and of great diversity, but still a place where there's a sense of togetherness. A place where we're proud to say: "everyone different, everyone matters".

What does Calderdale have to offer?

Halifax's Dean Clough Mill supports a host of small businesses, restaurants, and extensive art gallery. Hebden Bridge, once home to over twenty mills, has become world famous as a unique and highly original town with a thriving arts scene. Todmorden's spectacular Town Hall is highly prized as a venue for festivals and a great music performance venue. Sowerby Bridge is now home to over thirty restaurants with something to suit all tastes. Brighouse is rightly renowned for its extensive shopping, with local firms rubbing shoulders with national chains; while over one hundred businesses, many of them household names, have been established in Elland's Lowfields Business Park.

These successes - successes born out of adversity – have also been celebrated throughout the smaller towns and villages across Calderdale. They're successes we're proud of - and they're successes upon which we continue to build.

Calderdale today is a place where you can expect an excellent quality of life. There's plenty to do, with a good choice of restaurants, bars, theatres, cinemas, museums and art galleries to visit. Our beautiful countryside means opportunities for walking, riding and cycling are right on your doorstep. Watersports, including sailing, canoeing and
narrowboating, are also available up and down the Calder Valley. With six active lifestyle sites, not to mention numerous swimming pools, gyms and an athletics track, keeping fit in Calderdale has never have been easier. It's a great place to be active.

Shibden Hall  Halifax Tourist Information Centre

Calderdale has some of the best known landmarks in Britain. You may have seen The Piece Hall, our collonaded, Grade 1 listed architectural masterpiece in the film “Brassed Off” as well as various TV documentaries. Or perhaps Shibden Hall, Halifax’s exquisite Elizabethan mansion house, as featured in “Wuthering Heights” Our exceptional landscapes, as well as many of our 4000 or so listed buildings, have featured in film and TV innumerable times and rightly so.

Our future

We're excited about Calderdale's future. We're already investing in our libraries, leisure facilities, housing and schools so that our children will have a brighter future. A major retail development is planned for the centre of Halifax. Better transport links, including direct trains (from Bradford) to London are in the pipeline. In short, we know we're in a good place today. But we like to think that tomorrow's going to be even better.
